Destination Parenthood – PGS Treatment

It is many parents dream to balance their family. Here at euroCARE IVF Clinic, we can help make this dream come true. As part of the IVF treatment process, we can implement a highly specialized procedure in order to determine the gender of the embryos — before they are transferred to the womb.

This specialized procedure is called Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS).  It is a powerful genetic test that may be performed on embryos during IVF treatment at euroCARE IVF to choose the gender of your baby and also to screen for any numerical chromosomal abnormalities (Aneuploidy disorders).

This advanced method of gender selection assists our IVF experts in choosing the desired embryos to transfer and also select those with the best potential to result in a healthy pregnancy.

PGS offers comprehensive analysis of all 24 chromosome types: the two sex chromosomes (X and Y) and the 22 other non-sex chromosomes. Normally there are 23 pairs of chromosomes in each human cell. Aneuploidy is the presence of an abnormal number of chromosomes in a cell, for example, having 45 or 47 chromosomes when 46 is the normal number in each cell.

When there is an extra chromosome present, it is known as Trisomy. When there is an absent chromosome, it is known as Monosomy. The most common example of a chromosomal aneuploidy is Down Syndrome (or Trisomy 21). Downs Syndrome is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21.

Other common chromosomal aneuploidies are Trisomy 13, where there is an extra copy of chromosome 13 in the cells and Trisomy 18, where there is an extra copy of chromosome 18 in the cell. The risk for miscarriage with these defects is increased and babies born with Trisomy 13 or 18 have severe intellectual disabilities and other birth defects. The majority of babies do not survive past the first few months of life.

Turner Syndrome can also be detected through PGS as this is caused by the absence of one of the sex chromosomes.  Approximately 99% of pregnancies affected are miscarried.  Another sex-linked disorder is Kleinefelter syndrome, where there is an extra X chromosome detected in males.

Accuracy of PGS Testing

You may ask how accurate is PGS testing? The PGS biopsy is 99.9% accurate in determining the gender of the embryos before they are returned to the womb.

Benefits of PGS Treatment

PGS has its benefits — we can ensure you have only male or female embryos transferred, plus also ensure the embryos have no chromosome abnormalities and are genetically healthy.

PGS can benefit:

  • Women aged 35 and over
  • Carriers of sex-linked genetic disorders
  • Carriers of single gene defects
  • Those with chromosomal disorders
  • Women experiencing recurring pregnancy loss associated with chromosomal concerns
  • Couples wanting to balance their family

Swim-Up Sperm Sorting

Here at euroCARE IVF, we also perform the ‘swim-up’ method for gender selection — which is similar to MicroSort technologies. The swim-up method for gender selection is almost identical to the Percoll method: separation of X and Y-sperm is the result of the standard technique used to isolate motile sperm for use in IVF medicine. By carrying out the sperm sorting procedure before ICSI takes place we increase the chances of having more male or female sperm in the sperm sample selected to fertilize the eggs, giving more chance of finding embryos of the desired gender.

As the leading IVF clinic in North Cyprus, euroCARE IVF is a remarkable achievement in patient-centered fertility services and cutting-edge technology. From the moment you walk in — you are embraced by a relaxed and calming environment.
